Starting a trucking business is not for rookies and it is essential that you have proven experience behind you before you consider attempting to start up your own small business. Trucking is a profitable industry which generates profits of approximately $346 billion in the US alone every year. If you want to be part of that you will have your work cut out for you before you turn a wheel.
What follows are ten essentials that you must do before you start your trucking business.

First essential is to think about a name for your company. It needs to be easy to remember and have some link to the materials you will be hauling. It has been said that this is more difficult than it seems.

Second essential springs from the first in that when you have decided what you want to haul, will give you an idea of the type of tractor, trailer and other equipment you will need to get you up and running.

Third essential is to get your Federal Authority in place. Quite simply you cannot get into the trucking business without this.

Fourth essential is to get your insurances and bonding organised. Your small business won’t get off the ground without these.

Fifth essential is your BOC-3 Filing. This provides you with a list of agencies in every state that you can contact when you need help on the road.

Sixth essential is to license you tractor and trailer in every state that you intend to operate in.

Seventh essential is your IFTA Licence. This makes paying your state fuel taxes easier with one payment in your home state. The tax due to other states that you have been working in is distributed to them through this system.

Eighth essential is the Federal Heavy Highway Use Tax. This is the Federal Government’s tax on truck drivers for use of the Federal Highways.

Ninth essential is your Single State Registration. This is paid to the DOT in each state that you will be working in.

Tenth essential is to check if you need an additional Individual State Permit. This is in addition to the Single State Registration. New York and Oregon are two states which require an Individual State Permit.
This gives you an idea of what you need to get your small business on the road. However that was just the paper work. Now you need to look at other essentials for your trucking business. It is assumed that since you have gotten this far that you already have your truck or the start up funds that you will need to buy one. Have you got a business plan? How are going to market your business? If your head is beginning to ache I have to advise you that we haven’t looked at the safety regulations yet. However you can take heart because there is support out there. Use your trade magazines and the internet. Above all use your head to get your small business off to a good start.
