Choosing organic baby gifts
Author: Kimberly Preston
Many people today like to buy products that they feel are "Green", kind to the earth and kind to your skin, but are all products equally green? Whilst a plant may be grown in an organic way the process to make it into a usable product may not be so green. So which is the greenest product available to us?
Organic cotton is grown generally in India and America, its cotton that seed is not genetically altered in any way and is produced using toxic pesticide or synthetic fertilizers. So this gives a far more natural product that is less likely to cause irritation to people with an allergy.
This type of cotton is used to make a wide variety of goods from personal hygiene products to towels, sheets, t shirts and Personalised baby blankets too. A lot of people will now choose this type of cotton for new born babies so the chance of eczema is reduced on a baby’s delicate skin, the same also applies to adults of course but then there are those people who choose this cotton just because it’s kinder to the planet. This type of product can be labelled as organic by the soil association.
Another up and coming plant used for textiles that also has great properties is bamboo. This plant is one that can be harvested time and time again from the original plant, as it is a grass it will re-grow once cut.
The product produced from bamboo, bamboo viscose, is very absorbent so it is ideally suited to towels and bathrobes. The bamboo fibre is often mixed with organic cotton to make a wide variety of textile goods.
The baby market is one where you will find a lot of products such as Personalised baby clothes made from these organic and natural fibres. There appeal is sought after by mothers wanting to only have natural breathable fabrics next to their newborns delicate skin and as a gift from those who just prefer to keep thing natural or have an interest in our planet and sustainable products.
Bamboo in particular is a wonderful product for use in baby goods; it’s very soft when woven and so is extra gentle on a baby’s skin at bath time as well as being more absorbent than cotton. But you must not fall into the trap of thinking like wool or cotton is a very "green" product. There are a fair few chemicals that are used to get bamboo for the grass that’s grown to the fibre used for textiles, but it may be fair to say that it’s still a better product for the environment than traditional polyester. But whilst the original bamboo plant may have been organically grown the end textile products cannot be on the Soils Association organic register due to how the fibre is produced.
So when buying products customers need to keep in mind whether they are buying them because they appeal in the properties they have; such as absorbency, softness etc. Because if you’re buying from an ethical or Green point of view then cotton must still be the choice to go for but a short head.
