Breast Feeding Problems - Baby Won't Latch

Breast Feeding Problems - Baby Won't Latch

She was our first baby, so it was all new to us too.

Thank God for the lactation nurses at the hospital who helped my wife a couple of times. They would coach her and correct her. At the hospital everything seemed to go so smooth, but at soon as we got home it was as if it was the first day all over again... the baby crying and us not getting any sleep.

But now nine months later, breastfeeding just comes so natural for my wife and my little one. The stress is all gone.

I wanted to share our story with mothers who are currently dealing with this problem, because you're not alone. I believe all mothers go through this in the beginning. It's a learning process. It'll get better. The more you do it, the better you'll get at it.

So have faith and just keep taking little steps. Here are some helpful tips from women who have experienced this problem:

  • Relax. Babies sense your emotions. If you are tense they will sense it. Before you breastfeed your baby, step to the side and take a deep breath. Maybe go for a quick 2 minute walk if possible. Please, don't leave your baby alone!. Leave it with your loving husband for a few seconds while you relax.
  • Let the baby feel your skin. This is what is called skin to skin. This helps the baby get in the mood.
  • Tease your baby. Place your nipple to his mouth, especially his upper lip and wiggle it. The purpose of this is to help him open up wide. Once he opens up wide, that's when you insert your nipple straight in.
  • Check with the hospital where you delivered your baby or with a hospital close to you. Most hospitals have lactation centers to help women who are having problems breastfeeding.
  • Check out the La Leche League. They are an excellent non-profit group who strongly believes in the power of breastfeeding. Their website is full of very helpful tips and resources.
  • Don't force your baby to breast feed. Maybe your baby is not hungry. Some baby feed a lot, others don't. If your baby is hungry he will show some interest in your breast.

Well these are just some tips. Try them. As you get more experienced, you'll come up with your own ideas.

Believe or not this whole thing that you're going through is actually something positive. It's called bonding. You are actually bonding with your baby. So be patient and remember to enjoy motherhood as much as possible.

At some point most mothers bottle feeding their babies will experience some kind of problem. Most are easy to resolve but any major concerns should be addressed to your doctor. A common problem is not enough air entering the bottle after the baby has sucked out some of the milk. It causes a problem because the air is needed to balance the pressure inside the bottle. Air enters through the holes in the end of the nipple or between the nipple ring and the bottle. There are some orthodontic nipples that have extra holes at the nipple base (near the nipple ring). If the nipple ring is screwed on too tightly to the bottle and your baby's tongue is covering and making a seal over the nipple holes you will probably have difficulty bottle feeding.
